How to stay present in our busy lives

Many people describe their lives as busy and fast paced and not having enough time to slow down or switch off. Due to constantly being on the go it can be challenging to stay in the present moment. Instead when we take breaks our attention usually goes to our phones, TV or the other distractions of day to day life. The danger of not being present is that we are often mindlessly engaging in activities but in the background our mind is continuing to be active.

Due to the nature of our lives we rarely allow ourselves time to slow down and be in the present moment. Being present can improve both our mental and overall wellbeing. Benefits include reducing stress, anxiety, improving concentration, engagement and our overall happiness.

Below are some key ways to stay present even when our lives are busy:

Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness practice can be used both formally and informally.

Formal practice may include engaging in meditation that prompts you to focus your attention on your breath and observe your thoughts without judgement.  Engaging in this practice regularly can reduce stress and anxiety, improve cognitive functioning and improve self-awareness.

Informal mindfulness may involve trying to stay present during activities such as cooking, walking, reading or exercising. To remain present continue to bring your attention back to the activity whenever your mind wanders.

Practice Gratitude

Each day try and focus on a few things you are grateful for. This can allow us to stay present and appreciate what we have.

Connect with nature

Spending time in nature each day can help you stay present and reduce stress. Try even spending a few minutes in your backyard, a local park or lake.

Use your senses
Engaging in our senses can allow us to be in the present moment. Try paying attention to your five senses; sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste. This will allow your attention to be in the present rather than the distractions of everyday life.

Connect with loved ones

Spending time with loved ones can help you stay present and improve your relationships. Connecting with others can reduce stress and anxiety, improve mood, and increase overall well-being.
